Does anyone else find it annoying the way some people seem to think Paul wrote all the best melodies, and John wrote all the best lyrics? I don't think that's fair because John also wrote lots of beautiful melodies and Paul could write good lyrics too.
What do you think were John's greatest melodies, both solo and Beatles?
I think some good examples are: Oh My Love, If I Fell, Girl, Just Like Starting Over, Woman, Jealous Guy, Because, Julia, and lots of others!

I love 'In My Life', it has a great tune, as well as 'Norwegian Wood'. I don't like when people start saying that John was just a mere lyricist, 'cause he wasn't. He also composed gorgeous melodies, that came straight from his heart. Those people should listen to his solo work - he was the one who composed the songs, both lyrically and melodically. Those comments make no sense whatsoever. In addition, Paul also wrote beautiful lyrics, like 'When I'm Sixty Four'. I believe people can't label them as 'lyricist' or whatever, they were a driving force and they helped each other in both terms. In a nutshell, they were great.

John and Paul BOTH wrote beautiful lyrics and melodies together as well as apart! Whoever thinks otherwise isn't listening to the music itself as a whole, just simply focusing on one or the other. They both balanced each other like Yin and Yang, I think, lyrically and melody. Listen to THIS! www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhCKdqz2ekw

Thanks, gijoe26, that's wonderful. (made me cry ) I also think that This Boy has a great melody and one of John's underrated songs

I nearly cried. It is hauntingly beautiful. Who cares about the quality of it, it is a masterpiece.

I've always loved that song. I cried when I heard it--It's a song I would have loved to have sung for him, like a dedication. "Now and then, I miss you."

His A Day in the Life melody is my favorite- John was very melodic, all through his career. It's hard for anyone to compete with McCartney in the melody department but John did fine there- maybe it's because his lyrics were so much better than Paul's, they use that to reference him.

So many great melodies, but "Strawberry Fields Forever" is my personal favorite. Also love "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" - very Dylanesque!
Not sure about "Revolution 9" though - hard to sing to that one! :-)

Hi Jack ... good choice; "Strawberry Fields Forever" is one of my favourite too "You've got to hide your love away" and also "Norwegian Wood" are both clearly influenced by Dylan. Yeah, "Revolution 9" is a quite special song ;D Which are your favourite songs from John's solo-career ? Snoopy

Again, so many great melodies from John's solo career -- it's all great. But if I had to pick favorites, here they are:
"Imagine" (from "Imagine") (one of the greatest songs ever written -- beautiful, moving, powerful - an anthem for the world)
"Mother" (from "John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band") (stark, haunting, beautiful)
"Love" (from "John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band") (one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard)
"God" (from "John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band") (proclaiming that "the dream is over" along with the long list of "non-beliefs" is still as moving and powerful today as it was when it was released)
"Give Me Some Truth" (from "Imagine") (still quite relevant today -- maybe even more so!)
"Oh My Love" and "How?" (from "Imagine") (timeless beautiful ballads)
"Watching the Wheels" (from "Double Fantasy") (an enlightened response to the critics claiming that "surely [he was] no longer happy since "he no longer played the game")
"Woman" (from "Double Fantasy") (beautiful musically and lyrically)

The lyrics of 'In My Life' are brilliant. 'Jeaulous Guy' is a somewhat beautiful song as well.
I do think Lennon's lyrics are better (like Bob Dylan's are), but some of him melodies were also good... 'Norwegian Wood' for example. I've always thought 'Watching The Wheels' had a good melody as well.
