I know this is a John Lennon/Beatles forum, but this is the off-topic section, isn't it? As you can tell, I'm a huge fan of Elvis, and he was a huge influence on The Beatles as well. He is my number one favorite musician (don't get me wrong, I still love The Beatles, band-wise, they're my favorite, since Elvis isn't a band ) and he was very talented as well, as a singer and as an actor. Anyone else like The King here?

I'm not really a big fan of Elvis, but I do like him. He had such a great voice, and as you said, he was a huge influence on the Beatles and music in general. If it wasn't for Elvis, there might never have been any Beatles.

Exactly, Elvis influenced The Beatles, and they influenced many other bands/artists as well. Elvis did have a great voice, and a successful career. It's a shame though, how most people today only think of him as "that fat guy in the jumpsuit," when he was more than that, much more than that. He's been dead for nearly 30 years, yet nobody's been able to take his title as King. And like you said, without him the Beatles may never have formed, or at least they may not have been as good as they were. The Beatles even met Elvis once, too.

Most people seem to think Elvis was better before he went into the army. His earlier songs had more of a 'rock 'n' roll' sound, I think. Change of Habit could probably explain it for you.

Here's an easy way to sum it up: 1950's (pre-army): Elvis was the hip-swiveling, lip-curling rock and roller who parents found "too sexual" for their children to watch on TV. It's also when I think he was at his best. 1960's (post-army): Elvis was the star of a bunch of cheesy romance movies. Nothing much happened until 1968 when he made his famous comeback special. 1970's: Elvis left Hollywood to return onstage, and this was when he adopted his famous "jumpsuit" look. In the 50's I'd say he released his best material, but this was when his voice was best.

I guess there is an exception to every rule, I don't generally listen to Elvis even though I have one of his best ofs. However I do really like some of his songs, even though he didn't write many of his hits he had a great instinct for what would be successful and what would not. I also remember when he died like it was yesterday, I remember my Mum crying a lot (I was 9 or thereabouts) and seeing your Mum cry has a profound affect on a child. She was so bad I thought a relative had died. It is now a family joke and he is often called uncle Elvis when I am around ha ha. There is no doubt about his influence. In a recent poll That's alright Mama was voted the most influencial single of all time. Long live the king.

Yea, this Thursday. Yesterday was the start of Elvis Week '07, they're saying this year will probably be the biggest yet. Wish I could go to Memphis for it, I'm going to miss the 30th Anniversary Concert
