Do you think John wrote his best music as a Beatle or during his solo career?

I think his Beatles songs were best. His solo stuff was great too but I prefer things like Across The Universe, Strawberry Fields Forever, I Am The Walrus, In My Life...I can't think of any of John's Beatles songs that I don't like.

I prefer his work with The Beatles, I Am the Walrus and Strawberry Fields Forever are some of my all-time favorite songs. But he did have some good post-Beatle songs, too.

That's a very difficult question to answer. I read an interview where John said he considered his work to be all one piece, from the poems and drawings he did in his childhood right through to the songs he was writing in 1980, and I would agree with that. I find it hard to separate his Beatles work from his solo work and say that one was better than the other. I think if you take some of John's greatest solo songs (such as Give Peace A Chance, Jealous Guy, Working Class Hero, Imagine, Woman, Happy Xmas) and compare them to his greatest Beatle songs (Strawberry Fields Forever, In My Life, Help!, I Am The Walrus, Norwegian Wood, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds etc) they were equally good. If you asked me the same question about Paul, though, I'd find it easier to answer. I'm not a big fan of his solo music, but I absolutely love his Beatle songs.

Because if John hadn't been in the Beatles he hadn't written stuff like SFF... But I think it is also depending of how you feel... And I don't like Paul's solostuff either

I think both eras are quite distinct and different, it's very difficult to give an answer without changing your mind almost straight away. These days I rarely play the Beatles albums, I find the solo years much more appealing even though I love the Beatles. I think the way that all four of the Beatles diversified after the split makes each of them interesting in their own way and my mood determines which of the ex beatles I go for when I am deciding what I want to listen to. Strawberry Fields will always be my favourite song but I guess in light of everything I have just said I would have to pick Post Beatles as my favourite period for Lennon's music.

Very well said You cant really compare say, Plastic Ono Band(which in my opinion was Johns best solo album) to any of Johns Beatle stuff Because Johns Beatle songs were in reality Beatle songs also where as the solo stuff were John songs

He wrote amazing songs all through his life, its almost impossible to choose between the two but if I was forced to choose I think I prefer his Beatles music a tiny bit more.

I think his solo work is better, and that is really saying something.

I agree I like his solo stuff better. Although I love the Beatles stuff. His solo stuff just spoke to me more, had more meaning to me.

Yeah. It is raw, powerful and simple. How? is an example of this. His solo work is genius, really.

I absolutely adore John's solo stuff, but my heart still lies in his Beatles compositions. "In My Life", "Across The Universe", "All You Need Is Love", "If I Fell"...omg...

Across The Universe is a magical song. One of John's best solo pieces.
