www.digitalspy.co.uk/music/a79848/beatles-fans-blast-ono-for-store-ad.htmlBeatles fans are reportedly furious that a John Lennon song is to feature in an advertisement for US retail chain J.C. Penney. Followers of the band have criticised Lennon's widow Yoko Ono for licensing the use of 'Real Love', saying she is exploiting the late singer's music. Beatles Fan Club chairman Pete Nash said: "Obviously you can't ask Lennon himself if you can use his song, but if you could, I'm 100% sure his answer would be to tell J.C. Penney to f*** off." He added: "I'm surprised Yoko has licensed the track for such commercial reasons, but she is the one who runs Lennon's estate, so the exploitation of his music is entirely up to her."

What are your opinions on this? I don't really see the problem with songs being used in advertising as I think it's a good way for music to reach a new audience, but I know it upsets a lot of people. What do you think? By the way, you can watch it here: creativity-online.com/work/view?seed=e36d2d91

I have always felt that part of the longevity of the Beatles success is down to the fact that the songs were not used in Ads. I feel that it cheepens the songs and with familiarity comes contempt. I know it brings the music to a new audience that might not otherwise listen to the Beatles but the songs have managed on their own merits for the last forty odd years.

I watched the commercial and it's not bad, better than when All You Need Is Love was recently used to advertise Luvs diapers! But though it doesn't bother me too much personally, I would prefer Beatles songs not to be used in ads at all. I guess I have mixed feelings about it. And whether John would want his songs to be used for those purposes or not, who knows? Beautiful song, though.

Wasn't Paul's song "Let Em In" being used in some commercial too?

Yeah, the Beatles/John's music will live on forever long after people forget whether it was ever used in an ad or not. Still, I don't really think Real Love should be in a commercial, particularly with it being the demo version, it just seems too special and personal to be sold off like that. I watched the commercial and it's not bad, better than when All You Need Is Love was recently used to advertise Luvs diapers! Yes, definitely! I didn't like that one at all.

All adverts should have songs by Beatles as they usually just have annoying ear-sores instead!

Has anyone else heard the "All You Need Is Luvs" diapers commercial?
It's absolutely terrible and is a disgrace to the Beatles using that song to sell baby diapers.

i hate the fact that especially Beatles and of course Lennon songs are being used for commercials and it seems now more than ever with the stupid Target commercials, Luvs, Chase banking its demeaning to their beautiful music. This music shaped rock and roll as we know it and what do we do? we put it on a diaper commercial how befitting....i think not. But i did hear that the reason why so many places are taking Lennon/McCartney songs is that Sony released them for public use, even American Idol got there clearance to use the music and this is all without consent i guess...and also a new break (i know i am all over the place) Michael Jackson still owns half of the Northern Songs (the label that Lennon/McCartney were on as Beatles) songs from the Beatles, but because of his bankruptcy he is selling them all and the first allowed bidders are Sir Paul and Ringo...I say it should have been that way to begin with or even better split up equally among all the "Beatle heirs" or remaining beatles...ok rant over thanks for reading!

It doesn't seem right to me.

Yeah I've seen that commercial. And I was actually watching American Idol when they said that, cept I was on the computer. When I heard Lennon/McCartney said, I screamed, then had to ask my sister and dad what they were saying. I really think that they are abusing their beautiful songs. -_-'; Have these kids get up and sing these songs, and they don't have a clue about The Beatles, John, Paul, or anything else! But whatever. LOL I can't do anything about it 'cept complain, which won't get anywhere. *pardon rant*

Well, I would have used the song. I'd want to get the music out there as much as possible to remind people of how good it is.
