walls and Bridges was one of the earliest Lennon albums I ever Purchased, a lot of the tracks I was already familiar with as outakes had been released on the Menlove Ave album that I had purchased shortly before this. As with most of Lennon's work the songs on this album were largely autobigraphical in construct, Lennon was going through his "Lost Weekend" and living it up in L.A. He admitted years later that he was desperately unhappy during this period and was badly wanting to be with Yoko, with all of this in mind a lot of the songs make sense. "Going down On Love" refers to the fact that he "Has to get down on his knees" in what I assume is a plea to return to Yoko. Steel and Glass was allegedly written about Allan Klein, the ex Beatles manager, however with lines like "Your Mother left you when you were small but you're gonna wish you wasn't born at all" it could easily have been about John himself, which he later admitted. It's a song that certainly appeals to me as I went through that as well. This Album was Lennons strongest since Imagine three years earlier and a welcome return to form. Ratings 1. Going Down On Love (6) 2. Whatever Gets You Through The Night (10) 3. Old Dirt Road (6) 4. What You Got (5) 5. Bless You (9) 6. Scared (7) 7. #9 Dream (8) 8. Surprise Surprise (Sweet Bird Of Paradox) (7) 9. Steel And Glass (7) 10. Beef Jerky (5) 11. Nobody Loves You (When You're Down And Out) (7) 12. Ya Ya (5) The best songs on this release are Whatever gets you thru the night, this track features Elton John and was responsible for getting John back on stage after John lost a bet to Elton that the single would not make #1. Of course it also led indirectly to John getting back with Yoko as she was in the crowd on the night of the concert that John appeared onstage with Elton John at madison Sqaure Garden. I also love Bless You, one of Lennon's best Ballads, soft and soulful, and beautifully sung. Lennon at his best. Being forced to choose the worst track is not really fair but YA YA would have to be it, it is more a small recording tacked onto the end for the amusment of John and Julian I think, Julian appears on the track playing Drums, it's still novel and is a nice moment. Stars: I would give this album **** (4 stars, Love it, you gotta get a copy) Two interesting things about the sleeve, the cover art features a drawing done by John when he was Eleven, you can imagine it being one of a handful that Aunt Mimi would have gathered up for the trash. "You'll regret that when I am famous Mimi" The second interesting item is a reference in the sleeve notes, On the 23rd August 1974 at 9 O'Clock John claims "I saw a U.F.O"

I've just realised there are still a few albums I haven't reviewed yet. WALLS AND BRIDGESPlease rate each track out of 10 (where 1 is the lowest and 10 is the highest) 1. Going Down On Love - 7 2. Whatever Gets You Through The Night - 8 3. Old Dirt Road - 8 4. What You Got - 5 5. Bless You - 8 6. Scared - 9 7. #9 Dream - 10 8. Surprise Surprise (Sweet Bird Of Paradox) - 7 9. Steel And Glass - 7 10. Beef Jerky - 5 11. Nobody Loves You (When You're Down And Out) - 10 12. Ya Ya - 4 Which song(s) do you like best? I've always loved Nobody Loves You (When You're Down And Out) - I think it's very underrated. My other favourites are #9 Dream and Scared. Which song(s) do you like least? My least favourites are definitely What You Got and Beef Jerky. (I won't include Ya Ya as it's not a complete song, though I think it was a nice idea of John's to credit it as "Starring Julian Lennon on drums and Dad on piano and vocals". How many stars would you give this album (where * is the lowest and ***** is the highest)? **** Other comments about this album: I know John himself didn't rate Walls and Bridges very highly and he described it as 'the work of a semi-sick craftsman'. I disagree with him - I think it's a great album. I love it.

I find it a really great album, because of its unusual melodies, and its cool sound. Although some of the songs sound dated with the seventies, the production fit some of the songs(9#Dream, Bless You, Whatever gets you) Although it was considered not good by critics, many fans found it very unusual. If you're reading this article and are wondering which version to get, by all means, get the remastered. I do have a warning though, it has a completely different cover than the original, which you may not like. A new edition of the album actually came out, and is reproduced just like the vinyl, so I would just get that.
Going Down On Love (9)- A perfect opener to start the album off Whatever gets you (7)- Boring, standards 70s stuff Old Dirt Road (8.5)- Much better to my ears, and more relaxing What You Got(6)- It's alright, not that great, and is probably the worst track on here Bless You(9.5)- Awesome song that invokes emotion and feeling. Scared(7.5)- It's very haunting, that's all I have to say 9#Dream(10)- Very dream-like and the melody reflects the lyrics Surprise, Surprise(8)- I think it's a great song and is not filler. Steel And Glass(10)- I love this song ;D It is one of those songs that invoke emotion and hatred Beef Jerky(6)- Not bad for one of the first instrumental he's done Nobody Loves You(10)-Haunting, and is powerful Ya Ya(NR)- A cute little moment between father and son Bonus Track: Nobody Loves You(Acoustic)-even more haunting than the original recording(10+) Overall, a 8.5 from me.

Please rate each track out of 10 (where 1 is the lowest and 10 is the highest)
1. Going Down On Love -- 8 2. Whatever Gets You Through The Night -- 10 3. Old Dirt Road -- 9 4. What You Got -- 10 5. Bless You -- 7 6. Scared -- 7 7. #9 Dream --10! 8. Which song(s) do you like best? I really like "Whatever Gets You Through the Night," though it baffles me how none of his songs before it ever made it to #1 (even Imagine!?). I really love "#9 Dream" too. (And I really love the video for that song) And "Ya Ya" is very adorable having Julian on drums.
Which song(s) do you like least? "Bless You" I think. But only because I just find it a bit dull.
How many stars would you give this album (where * is the lowest and ***** is the highest)? 4**** Other comments about this album: Overall, it's a pretty good album. Some songs I couldn't live without, some I could.

Other comments about this album:
I think this is a very underrated album. John's peacenick reputation that Yoko has given him really does a great disservice to the talent that was John Lennon. Songs like these don't stand a chance against it.
