Imagine is the song most people associate with John Lennon. It's the song that usually comes top in "100 greatest songs" polls and most of us on this forum included it in our reply to the Top 5 John Lennon Songs thread.
Do you think Imagine really deserves to be considered John's greatest song, or is it overrated? Were some of his other songs better?

I love Imagine and I don't think it's over-rated but there are lots of other songs John wrote that I think were equally good. I can understand, though, why so many people like Imagine. It has a nice melody, simple but powerful lyrics and an important message. It's one of my favorites but whether it's his greatest song or not I can't decide.

Probably his greatest most popular song. It's about Peace, ......... so it gets into a lot of people's interests.

I don't think Imagine is John's best song. He wrote lots of others that I think are better and more interesting musically, both with the Beatles and solo. I'm not saying I don't like Imagine, because I do, just that's it's not one of my personal favorites.
However, it's definitely his most popular song and the one the majority of people would think of when they think about John Lennon (in the same way that people tend to associate Yesterday with Paul and Something with George). I don't know if 'popular' and 'best' are necessarily the same thing.

Imagine is a simple song with a universal message, I find the same message in Whatever gets You Thru The Night. It makes both of these songs powerful and they stir your insides in a way that inspires you and wants you to make the world a better place. I remember Imagine hitting number 1 in the uk after John died, it was a way for us all to greive publicly for the loss of our social conscience, our spokesman and our comedian, Lennon was all of these things and he was ultimately greater than his song. He is still shining on.

There are some Beatles songs that John wrote that i like better personally but I think it's true that Imagine is probably his greatest solo song. It's simple but beautiful and has such a powerful message, it really deserves to be so popular and I dont think its over-rated at all.

Definitely not his best song. John had so many beautiful songs, like Watching the Wheels and Mother, but to quote a few. However, I don't think Imagine is overrated - I mean, it's a beautiful song about the well-known peace & love 'cliché', as John would put it, and it is definitely one of the best songs ever written.

Now, look, Imagine is a great song and without a doubt Lennon's most well known song. However, he also did a lot of other great musical achievements. I think people should not overlook them, or it may be the fact that their Lennon music knowledge is not as deep as ours. Which would be a deep shame for them, as I personally think discovering the work of Lennon is as important as any scientific discovery.

'Imagine' is his most well known song, and certainly the one people mostly think of when talking about John. I think that, due to the fact that we are Lennon lovers, our 'Lennon music knowledge' is much, much deeper, which definitely makes us aware of how great his songs are. Unfortunately, not every person know how great they are, but the fact that they acknowledge 'Imagine' as an amazing song is enough. But, as lennonlegend said, discovering his work is way important. And I'm glad I've found it.

In a way, I agree. Imagine is such a beautiful song that desevers to have that name, but I also think that there are other songs that are underrated and some people compares them with "Imagine", and I think that's not fair

I don't think it's overrated at all. It's a simple tune with a deep meaning-peace. Plus, it's one of the only songs I can play the actual piano part to.

Really, lovely7rita? John knew that simplicity was the answer - and so he wrote Imagine. So simple yet so meaninful. Brilliant.
