What are your thoughts on this album? People often say John was losing interest in the Beatles around the time Let It Be was recorded and didn't contribute much to the album, and it's true Paul had the bigger hits on the album with Let It Be, The Long and Winding Road and Get Back which were all number 1s.
Lennon's songs were Dig A Pony, Across The Universe, One After 909 and the second half of I've Got A Feeling. I love all those songs, but another criticism some people have is that Across The Universe was written two years earlier in 1967 and One After 909 even earlier, which means his only complete new song for the album was Dig A Pony. I think they should have also included Don't Let Me Down on the album, which would have balanced things a little. What do you think?

Well, I like all John's songs on the album – in fact, I listen to Across The Universe and Dig A Pony more often than I listen to The Long and Winding Road or Let It Be, but that's just my personal taste. I agree that overall John's contributions to the Let It Be album were weaker than on any other Beatles album, probably for the reason you mentioned – that he was losing interest and wanted to concentrate on other things such as the music/art/peace campaigns etc he was doing with Yoko. I think when the songs were written isn't really important in my opinion – you could say the same about some of Paul's songs e.g. When I'm 64, I'll Follow The Sun were written when he was a teenager. I think they should have also included Don't Let Me Down on the album, which would have balanced things a little. What do you think? I absolutely love Don't Let Me Down. I know it was originally included in the track listing (when the album was still known as Get Back) but was dropped from the final tracklisting. I don't know why...I think it's a great song and would have made the album stronger if it had been included, maybe in place of Maggie Mae. By the way, I also love George's two songs – I Me Mine and For You Blue.

I always used to feel that Let It Be was the worst album the Beatles released. I also felt it went against the beatles policy of offering value for money as a large proportion of the album was already available in one form or another. Not only but also, Phil Spectors work on the album was not among his most memorable, in fact he had made a lot of the tracks 'orrible to be blunt. I understand Paul's indignation at having strings on The Long And Winding Road etc. However they corrected all of these issues for me when they released Naked which I felt was a far superior recording and more in line with the original concept. Johns offerings were weak but Naked is top. Don't Let me Down is awesome.

He wasn't at his best- he was on heroin and that made completing songs a bit rough. Not crazy about any of his stuff on there- "Across the Universe" is nice though. John was still creating good stuff, it just couldn't be pulled out of him. It appears the opening of "Imagine" was written around then because John is playing it on the piano during the sessions.
