PLEASE PLEASE ME REVIEW
Intro
It's 1963.Four boys from Liverpool named John,Paul,George, and Ringo, also known as The Beatles, have recorded their debut album in just one day.The title for this debut album is Please Please Me,the name of a song penned by John Lennon. This was a big deal for the boys.To them,it paved the way for becoming a Rock N` Roll band. After finally landing a record deal and a good manager named Brian Epstein, they finally got to do what they wanted to do most:write and record music.Little did these boys know that they were going to become more than just a Rock N` Roll band. They, within a year, would become the biggest sensation the world has ever seen. Not only would they get the record for the first British band to make it big everywhere in history and they would also start and inspire a British Invasion, but they would also become one of the most influential bands in history. Not only for the great music, but their distinct personalities as well. They had humor, character, and intelligence, which was hard to find at the time, and especially nowadays. They were so free and captured the true spirit of Rock N` Roll, which was something even Elvis failed at.We loved it when The Beatles made the press look like idiots with their hilarious responses to their stupid questions. All they wanted was to make music and have a good time, which is not only evident in their music, but also the interviews, concerts, and the movies. You just fell in love the second you saw them. They make you smile when you think about them. But ultimately, they gave most of us a reason to live, their music. It kept us going and even after 40 years,it STILL does, even if some of the songs don't fit your situations. With The Beatles,i found true love, just like many others. The kind of love that will ALWAYS stay in your heart and which you can never fully stop. Please Please Me is,in my view, the best thing to come out since the day the music allegedly died. But these boys proved the contrary. That the music was in fact,FAR from dead. This debut album is the best debut that has ever hit the record store. They wrote their own music and it was great for a change.A lot of artists at that time, notably Elvis, borrowed songs form other songwriters.Even the covers on this album are great. Some even better than the original songs, like Twist and Shout. Please Please Me also shows the potential these boys had to become the greatest band in history, which they fortunately achieved. Not long after the album's release,it seemed out of nowhere, girls were going ape, screaming like the world was going to explode and ripping their hair out as if they found out they had cancer. All the sudden, girls wanted to touch them in a sexual way.It was unbelievable, cause it sorta DID come out of nowhere. But we understand. The Beatles were just, simply,f**king brilliant.
Review
1.I SAW HER STANDING THERE-This debut album kicks off with a countdown from Paul(1,2,3,4)and after that,a rocking opener which could not have been better for the time, starts in full swing. This song is like saying "Let us introduce ourselves,we are The Beatles".This is a song i can easily imagine myself dancing to in a Sixties nightclub with The Beatles, like that scene in A Hard Day's Night.I would have never changed the opener for ANYTHING,not even for The Beatles best song. The song has so much energy which a great opener needs and it's completely fresh.
2.MISERY-An underrated and ultimately forgotten song. This song kind of reminds me of a prelude to Hold On,the second track in John's solo album JOHN LENNON/PLASTIC ONO BAND.Hold On is more optimistic with it's message(it's gonna be alright),but this song is more pessimistic.John sings this perfectly, like every other song he sings.Wish it had a little more popularity, but i guess i don't mind.Maybe it's better this way, because that way the song isn't overrated.
3.ANNA(GO TO HIM)-At the moment,i have not heard the original song, but this song is SO John.No one else in the group could have sung it better. It's a lovely song, but so heartbreaking to listen to at times. The subject is very true to reality. The singer's girlfriend, the Anna of the title tells the singer she loves another man and is asking him to set her free so she can be with that other man.The singer is devastated, because not only does he love this Anna, but this has happened to him before with the previous girlfriends he had(But every girl i ever had/breaks my heart and leaves me sad).but all the singer can do is set her free and go to the one she wishes to be with, since he only wishes her the best.Although a sad song,it gives me happy memories of the times in Tampa. But it makes me sad too, since i want to go back but i really can't.
4.CHAINS-Underrated song here.Although George was not the best singer in the group,he certainly can sing this song perfectly. This song reminds me of the movie "The Sandlot" since the movie is set in the early 60's and there are songs played that are similar to this one.Sometimes i like to think this song is about me,heehee.
5.BOYS-Probably my least favorite song on the album. But saying that it's the "worst" is exaggerating and too harsh in my view.I used to like this song a bit,but it gets quite annoying after a while. But it's still a fun song in a way,and it's also fun to make fun of.I can't help but be amused at the thought if the song were released today and what those conservative parents would do."Yeah, did you hear that new song BOYS,it's sounds as if The Beatles are gay,you know the line,i`m talking about boys, what a bundle of joy, doesn't that sound wrong" "Yeah Sharon it does, hold on there for a second" *gets of the phone and shouts to her kids that are listening to BOYS "Tracy, turn off that damn gay music, you will not be hearing the Beatles anymore and if you do,your ass will be grounded".And then when the kids hear from their parents that The Beatles are gay, this is what they might be talking."Hey guys, guess what?Me and JJ just got the new Beatles album" *naive kids gasp* "Oh my god Amber, you are not serious, didn't hear? "What are you guys talking about" "The Beatles ARE GAY"
"WHAT?No they're not" "Yes they are, didn't you hear about that song Boys?" *Amber and JJ roll eyes* "Guys, are you blind? You obviously have been listening to your parents a little too much,if you guys really listen to this song,it's really about kissing girls, not boys" "No,we are not blind and no matter what you say,THE SONG IS GAY.Dad said so" *girls roll eyes and leave* "Man,those girls are f**king retarded" "I know right?Next thing you know no one will be talking to us cause they think we're gay just cause we listened to some song".Next thing you know the right wing parents start a ban on The Beatles.Man,i could go on ALL DAY.
6.ASK ME WHY-I quite like this song and i LOVE to think John was singing to me.This song used to annoy me with the why-yi-yi-yi's because it reminded me of Billy Joel and some of his songs. But my thoughts have changed and i have grown to love this song.
7.PLEASE PLEASE ME-Whether it's the first oral sex pop song or not, this song is the best track on the album.Duh,why else would it be the title of the album? Not surprisingly,i love to think the song is about me also. The song sums up the sexual feelings i have for John, whether the song means to be sexual or not.Especially those Come On`s ,i like to think that is John's way of saying to me "Yeah, you KNOW i`m asking for it".
8.LOVE ME DO-Ringo once said that this song kinda started it all.Which is sorta true.It was their first single, but it was a minor hit at the time. It's a great song, especially that harmonica, and was used perfectly in that movie "I Want To Hold Your Hand" when that girl Pam literally makes love to Paul's bass since she can't make love to Paul.
9.P.S I LOVE YOU-This song used to amuse me a bit,and still does.When Paul sings "P.S" it's like he's saying B.S a.k.a bullshit,to me,it sounds like he's saying "B.S I LOVE YOU/YOU YOU YOU".Doesn't fit the song,but it's a good line to use with your boy/girl friend when he/she claims you don't love him/her enough.Good song though.It reminds me of my Christmas days.
10.BABY IT'S YOU-the most underrated cover, like "Anna",the song is SO John. Also like "Anna",i have not heard the original song,i like to think this song is about me and i dumped John and he is so heartbroken and he claims he still loves me(he better, that's for damn sure).
11.DO YOU WANT TO KNOW A SECRET-I love this song.Another underrated track.George sings this perfectly. This also gives me happy memories of my younger days.It also reminds me of The Beatles cover of "Til There Was You" with those "DO DA DA"`s.
12.A TASTE OF HONEY-Not the best song on the album, but a bit better than Boys. This song would be great for a commercial(With the original song of course)."A Taste Of Honey" would be the name of the product and the motto would be "Much sweeter than wine".
13.THERE'S A PLACE-I used to think this song was OK,but the more that i thought about it,the more i came to realize that the song is actually good.It has a great message. It taught me that that the mind is the greatest place in the world.Because you can make it into anything you want,no matter how impossible it is in reality.
14.TWIST AND SHOUT-The album, like it started, ends with equal,if not, more energy and it couldn't have ended better.Seriously, who doesn't like this song?No wonder the Isley Brothers version is forgotten. This version really does rip the original version in shreds, and gives it the full energy it needs. When he recorded this song,John had the sore throat and all he could do was gives it his best. And boy,did he enhance the energy and quality of this song.John gives this a raw sound, and that is why he is one of the world's greatest singers. It's not really a cover,it's actually an "upgrade" if you think about it.
Epilogue
So,this isn't their best album and it isn't flawless, but it still deserves four stars because it IS a great album nevertheless.Luckily, the band got the huge reward they deserved after the album's release.Well, good night fellow Beatle Lovers and Readers.Until the next review.
Peace and Love,
Jordan O` Boogie
Anyway enjoy!
