I was listening to the Beatles cover of “You’ve Really got a Hold on Me” and got thinking. John loved old rock and roll, and it became ingrained in his soul. He always looked back at it fondly, and got a lot of inspiration from it. “You’ve Really got a Hold on Me” in particular is very much him, in my opinion. He could have written it. Contradictions throughout the lyrics, which he obviously enjoyed. It’s funny as well as emotionally desperate.
For example:
“You’ve Really got a Hold on Me” Oh, ho, ho, you treat me badly I love you madly
I don't want you But I need you Don't wanna kiss you But I need to Oh, ho, ho You do me wrong now My love is strong now
“Nobody Told Me” Always something happening and nothing going on There's always something happening cooking and nothing in the pot
Everybody's runnin' and no one makes a move Everyone's a winner and no one seems to lose
See what I mean?
