I had reservations about the idea of taking John's demos and turning them into 'Beatles' tracks. I seem to remember reading that George took some persuading at first, but I'm so glad that they did decide to go ahead.
George's guitar work on Free As A Bird was truly awesome, it reaches right down into the core of me with it's soft plaintive aspects yet still has great power on the surface too. Paul did manage to graft in sympathetic lyrics too and both his and George's vocals were darned good.
Real Love was more complete to start with, more John, less Beatles. So viewed overall the Best Beatle track was Free as a Bird, the best Lennon track was Real Love.
And whatever value we all derived from the exercise, I was happy to think of the benefit at a purely personal level that the Threatles must have enjoyed - a revival of old camaraderies over a few cans, some further healing perhaps of remaining scar tissues?

It's gonna have to be Real Love. I've never really cared for Free as a Bird.

I absolutely adore Real Love. The lyrics are just so dead innocent and perfect and I love singing it.
But then Free As A Bird...George's guitar work is incredible, of course, and I love how they did the vocals...more of a Beatles reunion-y sorta think, I suppose. And for that I just...love it.
However, as a general song, I do prefer Real Love.

I gotta stick up for Free As A Bird. I love it, and I think it sounds more like a Beatley song than real love. RL is more of a John song. I think our good buddy Paul said that too. Also, I play Free As A Bird whenever someone I know dies.

I love both, but I think I prefer Real Love. It's more of a complete John song.

I love both songs, but I like the version of "Real Love" from John's Acoustic better.
