www.pr-inside.com/richard-blasts-the-beatles-music-r418344.htmSir Cliff Richard has blasted pop legends The Beatles' musicianship - branding their guitar solos "horrific". The veteran crooner dominated the British music charts when the Fab Four first appeared on the music scene in 1962 - and is in disbelief their poor guitar playing was deemed sufficient enough to be included on their debut album. He says, "Some of the guitar is so out of tune it's unbelievable. I couldn't believe that here they were in this hi-tech age and they couldn't go back and do it with a tuned guitar." And the 67-year-old insists he has enough hit records to back up his claims, adding: "I've sold more singles than... everybody."

I guess it goes to show how desperate the buying public were to get away from Cliff that an out of tune guitar was preferable to the lightweight music he was releasing. Also you are bound to sell more records than anybody else when the public had no viable English alternative until the Beatles came along. What is Cliff reduced to now, churning out a Christmas hit once in a blue moon. I think Cliff has also missed the point that Please Please Me was virtually recorded live, In one day, with little time for the finer points. Have I said enough yet or should I continue........

Cliff Richard has never been very big here (in the US) but from the few songs of his I've heard I can understand exactly why people prefered to listen to those 'out of tune guitars'! Also, as you say, they were aiming for a live feel by recording Please Please Me in as few takes as possible. They deliberately did not go back and re-record things, which I think is part of the charm of the album. Their guitar playing sounds fine to me and is certainly not 'horrific'!
