A little help from their friends

A WEBSITE has been launched which uses Beatles songs to test links between memory and music.
MagicalMemoryTour.com is an attempt by the British Association for the Advancement of Science and scientists at the University of Leeds to create the largest database of autobiographical memories ever assembled by asking people to blog their memories of arguably the most successful band ever.
It is hoped it could help scientists learn more about how the brain functions and the way we relate to our memories.
The website – designed by Cardiff-based agency Savage and Gray Design – allows contributors to select any number from the Beatles’ extensive library and list what the songs meant to them. It has already attracted numerous submissions from around the world.
Recently launched in the USA and the UK, the survey’s results will be revealed at September’s BA Festival of Science in Liverpool.
Among the most popular memories so far are the day John Lennon was shot and the Beatles’ legendary first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show in the US.
On their website the organisers say, “How have the Beatles shaped people’s lives? What kind of role do the Beatles and their music play in our personal histories and can this help increase our understanding of human memory?
“We are interested in how things the Beatles did – songs, movies, news stories, and so on – intersect with our own lives through our memories.”
