Apart from the Beatles, there were lots of other Liverpool bands in the 50s and 60s, for example Gerry & The Pacemakers, the Swinging Blue Jeans, The Big Three etc - some were successful and others never made it. I think The Searchers were the best of the other Merseybeat groups, after the Beatles. What do you think? This is a site called Merseybeat Nostalgia, where you can listen to music by all the different bands. www.merseybeatnostalgia.co.uk/index.html

OK, I will jump in on this. First off, I think John first and for most, if he were alive would be insulted to be put into the same category as the other mentioned bands
Yea sure, the Searchers had a few so called hits. But really.Who listens to Needles and Pins often?
Ferry Across the Mersey by Gerry is totally dated today and no one plays it.
The Swinging Blue Jeans had one minor hit, but the song was only about 1 minute and 45 seconds long.
At the time that the Beatles were changing the world, there were a lot of British Bands participating, but the Searchers and the Swinging Blue Jeans were not part of it

I think the Beatles were the only moving thing that came out of Liverpool, for other bands of substance you have to go to London, Obviously the Stones were happening in a big way and we often overlook the Kinks, what a great band they were.

Yes, I know none of the other Liverpool bands achieved anywhere near the success of the Beatles, but to begin with they were all starting out together, had the same musical influences, were playing in the same clubs etc. Other than that, I agree there's certainly no comparison. I was just interested to know if anyone liked any of those other groups or not. Obviously not. By the way, nocturnalquadruped, I absolutely love the Kinks and I prefer them to the Stones.

I'm with you, I thought Ray Davies was the closest anyone in that era came to competing with Lennon, I have found it really hard to track down original Kinks albums though, how about you? ;D

Yes, Ray Davies was a fantastic songwriter. I think he's very underrated.

Yes, Ray Davies was a fantastic songwriter. I think he's very underrated. Ray Davies as well as John Lennon influenced one of my favourite artists, I am well into Paul Weller and his former bands, The Jam and the Style Council. Over the years Paul has recorded several Beatles and Kinks covers as well, and the thing that stands out most is that Weller always picks Lennon songs to cover, funny that. Paul Weller also recorded Come Together with Paul McCartney and Noel Gallagher, they called themselves the Smokin Mojo Filters and it was an excellent effort. All of the proceeds went to Warchild, a charity helping the children of Bosnia.

I remember Paul Weller also did a cover of Love for a John Lennon radio tribute I listened to a few years ago.

I think some of the other Liverpool bands had one or two good songs but were not in the same class as the Beatles, the Beatles had something special the rest of them didnt have.

Surely this is why the Beatles are number one. The black and white of the Gerry video matches the performance. The Beatles are energetic and exciting and sound great.

Yes, that's why I thought it was interesting to watch those two videos one after the other - the Beatles version was so much better, and full of energy compared to Gerry's.
