John played guitar, bass, piano/organ, harmonica and drums. His mother taught him to play the banjo when he was a teenager, before he learned to play the guitar. He also taught himself to play piano accordion as a child (I think it's an accordion you can hear on "Rocky Raccoon".)
That's all I can think of at the moment – there are probably others.

I think I once saw a picture of him with a piano accordion, in the studio probably in '67. Maybe I can find it again.

I forgot the ukulele. I remember reading that John and George were playing ukuleles when they were in Greece in 1967.

Wow, he must have had a lot of patience to play all of those ;D

I know I wouldn't have the patience. I can play piano/keyboard (though not very well) and I had a few attempts at playing the guitar but I never used to spend enough time practicing. But I think most professional musicians seem to be able to pick up any instrument and play it.

OH DAMN! Why is my grandfather not still alive I know he could play the harmonica and piano accordeon as well Otherwise I'd asked him if he could learn it to me ... BUT ... sadly enough he died few years ago. Oh, wait. We still have a harmonica here I didn't know John could play the drums! But he sure could play a lotta instruments. I can play a little harmonica, some piano/keyboard and a few chords on the guitar. I've been begging for a guitar for months now, but my parents won't give me one! Geez, stupid parents. I loved playing the guitar . Oh, and I can play some drums... But I learned pretty much al that (with exeption of the harmonica) at school, since the only instrument we've got at home is a harmonica wich we got when my grandfather died. Ugh. Non-musical parents suck!! Especially since my music teach said I should definitly play the guitar if I loved it so much HMPF. xD Um, yeah well.

I don't play any instruments either. I didn't have the chance to learn any at school and for years I begged my parents for piano lessons with no luck. Now I just don't feel motivated to learn and I feel as if I'm probably too old now anyway.

I'm only fifteen ) It sucks when your parents aren't giving you what you really want so very badly... Believe me, I recognize the feeling *sigh*

Of course you're not too old, Jean. Paul McCartney has just learned to play the mandolin and he's 64! (See the article I posted in the Paul section this morning).

Learning how to play an instrument takes time and it's very demanding, but as long as you really want to play it, you'll see it's not that bad

There is a bit of mystery with John and the piano. No one really knows when he learned to play it.
