How many songs can we think of that he wrote for other artists?
There were the three songs he gave to Ringo - I'm The Greatest, Goodnight Vienna and Cookin' In The Kitchen Of Love. I think Nobody Told Me was also originally intended for Ringo.
Do you know of any more?

In the early years, the Beatles gave a lot away, but you specified John, I think he wrote "Bad To Me" which was given to Billy J Kramer, and he of course worked on David Bowies "Fame" and he gave "Mucho Mungo" to Harry Nilsson. Beyond that I can't think of anything.

He wrote "I'm In Love" for The Fourmost, another Liverpool band, and he also gave them "Hello Little Girl".
The only others I can think of are "Rock & Roll People" (for Johnny Winter) and "Move Over Ms L" (for Keith Moon). I'm not sure about the last one, because John did record it himself, but I think he had intended it for Keith Moon.

I read in a biography (can't remember which one, sorry) about when the Beatles were on tour with Johnny Gentle in scotland, and John had helped Johnny Gentle write a song but then he didn't get any credit for it.

The Johnny Gentle song was called "I've Just Fallen For Someone". The lyrics John Lennon wrote were "We know that we'll get by, just wait and see, just like the songs tell us, the best things in life are free."
And this is what Johnny Gentle said about it:
"John came up with something he had written which happened to fit this song I was writing. I had a middle eight but wasn't happy with it and John agreed and he started telling me what I needed. I was annoyed. I thought, Here's this upstart telling me how to write songs. But when he played me his middle eight I was impressed."
(That quote is from the John Lennon Encyclopedia by Bill Harry.)

I know this is an old topic but another song John wrote and gave away was "God Save Oz" which he gave to Bill Elliott and the Elastic Oz Band. John's version is on the Lennon Anthology box set album.
