Has anyone else heard the song Echoes by Pink Floyd and noticed how similar it is to Across The Universe?
Lyrics from Echoes: "Cloudless everyday you fall upon my waking eyes Inviting and inciting me to rise"
Lyrics from Across The Universe: "Sounds of laughter shades of life are ringing Through my open ears inciting and inviting me"
Do you know if it was intentional? I think the melody also sounds similar in places.

I don't know. It does sound as if it might have been inspired by Across The Universe (I'm assuming Across The Universe was written first?)

I hate having to quote from Wikipedia because you never know how true the information is on there, but this is what the entry for Across The Universe says: Pink Floyd included a homage to the song in their acclaimed "Echoes": the phrase "inviting and inciting" is directly lifted from "Across the Universe," as well as some of the vocal melody. Roger Waters also recorded a cover of the song. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Across_the_Universe

Across the universe was certainly released first, I think Lennon was dabbling with early versions of Across the universe in 1967 where as Floyd did not release Meddle (the album Echoes came from) until 1971. Echoes incidentally is my favourite Floyd track mainly because of the beautifully melodic vocals. Dave Gilmour and Rick Wright I think sang this one.

Slightly off-topic but this was in the news today. I always like reading about how other musicians have been influenced by the Beatles. Pink Floyd Were Inspired By The BeatlesGuitar legend Dave Gilmour has hinted that there would be no Pink Floyd if it wasn't for The Beatles. The 61-year-old was speaking shortly after the release of his live DVD 'Remember That Night - Live At The Royal Albert Hall' when he admitted that he learnt how to play from listening to the Fab Four. He told reporters: "I borrowed my first guitar off a neighbour and never gave it back. I've still got it actually. "I was an enormous fan of the Beatles. I copied everything they did before I started creating my own stuff. I'd like to have been in the Beatles. They did well." From www.gigwise.com

Nice interview. I love 'Across The Universe'. No wonder Pink Floyd had been inspired by the lads.
