If the Beatles had kept Pete Best in the band instead of Ringo, do you think they would have still been as successful? It find it hard to imagine the Beatles without Ringo, but I suppose we would just have got used to it and wouldn't have known anything other than John, Paul, George and Pete.
Would Pete have been as popular as Ringo? (Remember, Ringo was very popular during the Beatlemania years and I think he even got the most fan mail for a while.) From what I've seen of Pete, he didn't have as much personality as Ringo.
What are your opinions about this?

Well, as you say, we wouldn't have known any different. However, I think Ringo played an important part in the Beatles' success and had a wonderful personality and sense of humor (and still has).

It seems to me that from what I have read in several books that George Martin was not happy with Pete Best and was the final nail in the coffin for Pete as far as the rest of the lads were concerned. George has also said in interviews that he was not happy with Pete's personality as it didn't fit with the rest of the band. George has even stated that the Beatles music had nothing to do with why he signed them, that it was all down to their charm and that he didn't like Pete's sullen attitude. As Brian Epstein had reached the end of the line in terms of record companies that he could take his tapes too, it also seems apparent that if the boys had not ditched Best there would have been no recording contract. Although George Martin was revolutionary in regards to the amount of leeway he gave the boys in recording I doubt he would have tolerated outright dissent at such an early stage of their association. Therefore instead of world domination I think another tour of the Garston ballrooms would have been on the cards. Make no doubt about it, John , Paul and George have all stated at one time or another that the feel of the band was not right until Ringo joined.

I like Pete Best, but Ringo was the missing piece. I really believe they still may have been the Beatles as we know them however.
