There is another thread about who was Johns best friend in the Beatles. I answered Ringo in that one. However I over looked Stuart. When I first got into the Beatles this was a man that intrigued me almost as much as John. Stuart led the classic Beatnik life, living hard and dying young. There is no doubt that had he lived he would have been doing the same for the art world in the twentieth century as the Beatles did for the music world. Stuart was also a visionary who had unshakable belief in the Beatles and more importantly in John. Despite the fact that Stuart died before the Beatles cracked the big time, John never recovered from Stu's death and the loss of one of his closest friends. Stu was often called the fifth Beatle (he has more of a claim than most) or more commonly the lost Beatle. I thought it might be nice to have a thread of photos for Stu. I will start them off with one of my favourites.

Great thread! I've always loved Stuart Sutcliffe. We can only imagine what he might have achieved if he hadn't died so young. I feel guilty for not starting a thread for him myself before now. Anyway, here are some more pictures. Stu and Astrid Stu and John on the beach

Don't feel guilty nowheregirl, I think you have enough going just keeping the forum working. Members are here to bring other ideas and views and in this case it is my pleasure.

Some Stuart Sutcliffe facts: Stuart was born Stuart Fergusson Victor Sutcliffe in Edinburgh on June 23, 1940. His Father Charles was a seaman and his Mother (also his biggest supporter) Millie was a teacher. After the family moved to merseyside Stuart attended Prescot grammar school and later the Liverpool College of Art. Stuart soon became friends with Bill Harry who would go on to start up the Mersey Beat magazine. Stuart also met and befriended John Lennon. Stuart won a prize at the John Moores exhibition, John Moores himself purchased one of Stu's paintings for 65 pounds. On the strength of this John convinced Stu that what he really needed was to buy a bass guitar and to Join Johns group. Stuart also helped John to come up with a name for the group he had just joined. Inspired by Buddy Hollys "crickets" Stu suggested the band be called "Beetles." With a slight tweek, John perfected the name "Beatles." It was obvious that Stu was not a natural musician and in the end he returned to his real love painting. While in Hamburg, Germany Stu met and fell in love with Astrid who would take a lot of now famous photos of the early beatles. Stu won a place at the state high school of art instruction in Hamburg and studied under Eduardo Paolozzi. After suffering from a series of seizures and headaches Stu was examined by a doctor in early 1962 but no cause was found. Sadly on April 10, 1962 Stuart Collapsed and died in Astrids arms. He was twenty one years old. Astrid sent two telegrams to Millie. The first read, "My Stuart is Dying" the second "My Stuart is Dead." The second telegram arrived before the first. The Autopsy discovered that Stuart had been bleeding into the right ventricle of the brain. Stuart was laid to rest in Huyton, Liverpool.

I saw on a movie called "John Lennon, in his own life" that stu died for a brain bleeding (I hope it's right ...what do you know about it? Yes davey, it was discovered in the autopsy that Stu had been bleeding into the right ventricle of the brain. There have been many speculations about the cause, some claim Stu was beaten badly after a Beatles gig and suffered severe head injuries that were not treated properly. John alegedly came to Stu's rescue and fought off his attackers. Stu refused medical treatment. Goldman claimed John kicked Stu in the head in an onstage brawl and was therefore responsible for his eventual death. Either way, or any other you care to mention, Stu's condition was not discovered until after he had died making any preventative treatment impossible.
